Hispanic Linguistics

Program Requirements

Master of Arts

In Hispanic Linguistics, the Master of Arts in Spanish consists of 55-60 quarter hours of course work, focused in five areas of study:

I. Phonology and Morphology
II. Syntax and Semantics
III. Historical Linguistics
IV. Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics
V. Psycholinguistics

The M.A. normally requires two years of study. Upon the completion of their coursework, candidates take a written and an oral examination.

Ph.D.

The Ph.D. requires 60 hours of coursework beyond the completed M.A. degree, a written and oral comprehensive examination and the completion of a dissertation. For the disseration, there is a preliminary presentation of the topic and, when completed, an oral defense.
