Language Program
Mission and Purpose
Welcome to the Spanish and Portuguese Language Programs. Our program encompasses Spanish courses 101 – 250, which provide Spanish instruction to more than 8,000 students annually. Its purpose is to develop student skills in communication across ethnic, cultural, ideological, and national boundaries, and help students acquire a deeper understanding of other cultures and patterns of thought. Additionally, courses from 101.01 to 104 are intended to enable students to fulfill the university’s general education course requirements (GEC). Spanish 240 and 250 not only further student linguistic and cultural skills, but also prepare undergraduates for entry into Spanish language coursework for majors and minors. These goals are accomplished by requiring students to demonstrate basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a language other than their native language. Additionally, students discuss cultural differences in countries other than their own, and demonstrate an appreciation of these differences. The introductory Spanish courses are linked to National Proficiency Guidelines1 and Standards for Foreign Language Learning2, which provide students with a basis for life-long learning.
The Spanish Language Program is renowned for its excellent staff, award-winning instruction, innovative programs, on going professional development, and highly satisfied students. Visit the links below to read student comments and learn about some of our accomplishments.
