Program

Globalization in the Mayan Country is an interdisciplinary program focused on the distinct history, culture and natural environment of the Yucatan peninsula. Students will explore tourism and the main role it plays in issues of socio-economic development, the preservation of important historical sites, protection of the environment and Indigenous culture. The program will consist of lectures from local scholars, field trips, discussion sessions, assigned readings and documentary films. All classes are taught in English but students will be introduced to the basics of Spanish language and Mexican and Yucatecan cultural norms, values and traditions.

Locations

Classes will be conducted at the Universidad Marista de Mérida in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Visits will be made to sites such as Gruta de Lol-Tun (caves), Mayan pyramids of Uxmal, Tulum and Chichen Itza, Museo del Chocolate, several plantations called "haciendas", tourist attraction of Xcaret, biospheres, reserves and beautiful beaches of the Yucatan.

Courses and Credits

Admitted participants are required to register in three hours of Spanish 2798.12. This course can be used to satisfy the Education Abroad Open Option GE. 

Accommodations

Students will live with local families in close proximity to Universidad Marista de Mérida.

Program Costs

You are responsible for paying The Ohio State University tuition plus a $3,726 program fee. The program fee includes airfare, accommodations and meals with a local family, local transportation, excursions, entry fees and supplemental insurance. It does not cover passport, visa (if necessary), non-homestay meals and personal expenses.
 
Students enrolled full time in spring semester may take up to three credits during the May session with no tuition costs. Fees, however, will continue to be charged. Tuition for enrollment beyond three credits will also be charged.
 
If students withdraw or become ineligible any time 11 days after the acceptance notification, they will be held responsible for a cancellation fee. Please refer to OIA's Cancellation Policy.

Application Information

Applicants must submit the Office of International Affairs Study Abroad Application online via Buckeyelink. Please note that upon application, a $150 application fee will be assessed to your Statement of Account. The application fee will be refunded only if you are not accepted or submit a written request to withdraw your application prior to the application deadline.

Scholarships

All accepted students who meet eligibility requirements for this program will receive a program specific scholarship award of up to $500.
 
Students should begin researching funding opportunities before they have been accepted into a study abroad program. Grants and Scholarships deadlines may occur before the study abroad program application deadline.

Special Petition Process

The U.S. Department of State has issued a Travel Warning for Mexico. All participants must submit a petition acknowledging they have read the travel warning and recognize the risk involved.* The petition will be provided by your Office of International Affairs study abroad coordinator and must be included as part of your acceptance materials for the program. All petitions are reviewed by the International Travel Policy Committee and subject to approval by the Provost. .

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for this program, students must be in good academic standing and meet OIA's General Eligibility Requirements and Conditions for Participation. All students will also be required to participate in on-campus pre-departure orientations organized by the Office of International Affairs.

Passports

Passports are required for every Ohio State study abroad program. For many study abroad destinations, passport information is required to apply for an entry visa (as early as 6 months prior to departure). For information about applying for a passport, go to this website.
