11th Annual Ohio State University Symposium on Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics

(RE)Defining Indentities in Moments of Transition

As the first decade of the new millennium draws to a close, the speed and above all the conditions in which humans move today reflects an increasingly globalized society. The ubiquitous rhetoric and reality of change compels us to reconsider the topic of identity as a fundamental component in the discussion of culture with all that the term encompasses. In this world that appear so fractured to us, contrasted with the marketed image of globalization, the sense of belonging is one of the most urgent. Where do we really belong? In reference to what community do we construct our identity? What mechanisms confer our identity in these new times. We invite all to reflect upon the concept of identity in its most ample meaning focusing on linguistic, literary, cultural, political or social issues that exist in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world.
