Special emphasis in P501 is on acquiring a good pronunciation of educated Brazilian Portuguese. Not open to students with credit for Portuguese 101 or 102.
PORTUGUESE 510
Portuguese TranslationP510 is a course in Portuguese to English translation. This is not only the most used language skill in real world jobs, but it has the effect of raising one's level of comprehension from 'generally getting the idea' to 'mastery of both intent and idiom'. Attention to contrasting the syntax and lexicon of Portuguese and English will occur throughout. New translations will be turned in every week with in-class anonymous proofreading of each other's work under guidance of the instructor. There is no textbook; the readings will be drawn from the online edition of Veja so that students are reading and writing on the same issues students are reading at the same time in Brazil. The readings will be correlated with captured TV broadcasts in the Crane Café.
PORTUGUESE 561
Brazilian Culture and CivilizationStudy of the development of Brazilian culture through its Portuguese language, literature, folklore, music, art, and film; special emphasis on contemporary issues.
