Course Description

Spanish 689 is an advanced Spanish language course. The context for the course is the Spanish-speaking communities of Columbus , Ohio . In class, guest speakers from the community will discuss their work and life experiences. In addition, students will go into the community to practice their Spanish skills with native and heritage speakers of Spanish. In addition to 35 hours of in-class activities, students must engage in 100 hours of contact with Spanish outside of class. Successful completion of Spanish 689 fulfills the experiential requirement for the undergraduate Spanish major.

Attendance policy

Regular attendance and timely arrival to class are imperative. If you miss more than two class sessions, you will be dropped from the course.

Tardiness/early departure policy

Because most of our class sessions involve visits from community leaders or field trips, it is important that you arrive to class on time. If for some extremely important and unavoidable reason you must arrive late, be as courteous and inoffensive as possible. Every two late arrivals to class count as one absence. Note that Friday classes are scheduled 9:30-12:18 , providing us with an additional hour for travel off campus. Every two early departures count as one absence.

Course etiquette

Students are expected to arrive to class on time and stay for the entire period. Peers, instructor, visitors and guest speakers are to be treated with respect and courtesy. Cell phones and paging devices must be turned off during class. Discourtesy, disrespect, and inattentiveness will result in banishment from this course.
