What is the Graduate Associate Teacher Training Workshop?
The Graduate Associate Teacher Training Workshop serves as the beginning of a continuous process of professional development that will extend throughout your career. The lectures, teaching practica, and materials presented in the morning and afternoon sessions will provide you with the basic tools and knowledge needed to begin your development as a teacher of university-level language and culture. - become familiar with basic theoretical and practical issues surrounding the learning and teaching of beginning language to adults
- become familiar with the characteristics of OSU students, programs, and resources
- develop skill in planning, organizing, and presenting instruction
- become familiar with common techniques, technologies, and materials used in language instruction
- learn a variety of strategies for monitoring learning, assessing student progress, and providing appropriate feedback
- become more aware of learner differences, styles, and strategies
- reflect critically on your own teaching, provide support and constructive feedback to others, and learn how to manage your own professional development
The dates of 801 GTA/Lecturer Training Workshop three-week session are as follows:
- August 31 – September 4 (9:00 am - 4:00 pm): Hagerty Hall 255: Methods and techniques for teaching Spanish language at the college level (Part 1). GTAs will schedule courses for Autumn 2009 during the first day of the workshop during your appointments with advisors after 4:00. We have also scheduled times for International Students’ Testing and Orientation. Dates and times will be announced on August 31.
- September 8 - September 18: The first session to be held in 180 Hagerty Hall. Your participation and satisfactory performance in the workshop are required as a condition of employment. You must attend all sessions in order to be paid. Training will continue for all Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs) thorough the Autumn Quarter as a regular academic course, Spanish 801. No waivers for previous teaching experience or methods courses will be made.
What is the Spanish 801 Seminar?
Methods and techniques for teaching Spanish language at the college level (Part 2) is a 5 credit hour course that follows the three-week intensive workshop previous to beginning of Autumn. This two hour seminar meets each Monday during the quarter to discuss techniques for teaching Spanish at the elementary level, to learn the theoretical basis of second language acquisition, and how to use important resources that are available to the teaching profession. The prerequisite is an appointment as a Graduate Teaching Associate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Spanish 801 22131 meets every Monday beginning September 28, 2009 from 5:30 - 7:18 in Hagerty Hall 0046.
