Spanish Honors Program
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers both an Honors Major and Minor. If you have questions, please contact an academic advisor.
Honors Major
The Spanish major consists of a minimum of 50 credit hours distributed as indicated below. A minimum grade of “C-” in all courses comprising the major is required. Students must maintain a minimum CPHR of 3.4 throughout the honors program. IMPORTANT: All Honors students, regardless of their major, minor, or college of enrollment, are required to follow the Honors program for a major or minor in Spanish.Graduation with Honors in the Liberal Arts with a major in Spanish

Core (40 hours)
- 603 Advanced Spanish Composition – 5 hours
- 3 courses at the 500 and 600-level in primary concentration - 15 hours
- 2 courses at the 500- and 600-level in secondary concentration -10 hours
- Two of these 5 courses must carry Honors status (EH = Embedded Honors available*)

Graduation with Distinction in Spanish
- Previously stated requirements listed under “Honors in the Liberal Arts with a major in Spanish”.
- Honors Thesis (for 8 – 10 hours of H783 credit) under direction of a faculty member chosen by the student. Student will also choose another faculty member in the department as a committee member. The thesis will also have an outside committee member, who will be chosen by the student in consultation with the thesis director
- One hour oral examination covering topic of thesis. All three committee members will participate in the exam
- CPHR of 3.30 and PHR of 3.60 in Spanish
Honors Minor
- Spanish 401 & 403; Honors sections are highly recommended, but not required
- Spanish H450 + 2 courses at the 500 or 600-level (one of which must carry H-status)
- Courses in English may not count toward the Honors minor program
- Honors minor contracts will require a minimum of 22 hours
