Soon after Bolivian independence, the Mojos of that nation's Amazon frontier face the twin challenges of liberalism and the rubber boom. This presentation, by Dr. Gary Van Valen, will show how these indigenous residents of ex-Jesuit missions survived and adapted through their own agency, viewing cultural continuity and change through the lenses of language and material culture.

This event is sponored by the Humanities Working Group Change and Continuity in the Andes and the Amazon.
