On Saturday, October 19, 2019, Sigma Delta Pi members celebrated Día de los Muertos! As part of the Week on Migration, Mobility, and Immobility, the event brought together Ohio State students, faculty and staff, and the community to celebrate and learn about the holiday. Attendees enjoyed music, face painting, Junior’s tacos, and a screening of “The Book of Life” at Gateway Film Center. Sigma Delta Pi members helped lead the procession with Laura Rodríguez as we danced our way to Sullivant Hall where Dance Brazil and Suzan Bradford Kounta, artistic director of the Thiossane Institute, collaborated to demonstrate dance migrations of the African diaspora within the Americas in their performance entitled, "How Movement Moves: Dancing Across Borders, from West Africa to the Americas". To close the afternoon, the Department of Spanish & Portuguese held a reception with a colorful altar, and Latinx showcased a pop-up exhibit entitled, "Comics Past, Present and Future".
In May of 2015, during the Annual SPPO Graduation Ceremony, the department also held the inaguration of our Sigma Delta Pi chapter. Headed by Professor Martinez-Cruz, the organization hopes to bring great opportunities to students of our department.
