Literacy in Translation Series

“Can you ask her about chronic illnesses, diabetes and all that?” A Look at How Register and Literacy Travel across Languages and Cultures

Claudia V. Angelelli is Professor and Chair of Multilingualism and Communication at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. In this presentation she discusses the co-construction of the meaning of “chronic” among the interlocutors, and the way in which they orchestrate team efforts to de-construct and re-construct the notion of chronic illnesses. The data raises questions on literacy and register as they travel across languages and cultures. This study has practical and theoretical implications for cross-cultural communication and medical translation/interpreting literacies in general and for the education of healthcare interpreters and health care providers in particular.
