Get to know SPPO: Jessica Rutherford

Jessica Rutherford
Jessica Rutherford is a Ph.D Candidate in Colonial Latin American Literatures & Cultures, whose research interests include: Luso-Hispanic Studies, Transatlantic Studies, and the History of Science.   She is currently writing her dissertation, provisionally entitled, “Magic, Medicine, and Religion on the Outposts of Empire: Sixteenth-Century Jesuit Missions in New Spain and Brazil”.

She hails from Ames, Iowa, but has lived in Columbus for five years now.   As you can see in the photo, she spends a lot of time with her puppy, Juniper Moon, that is when she isn't teaching and grading or working on her dissertation.

Although she is an active scholar, she also makes time to be an avid yoga practitioner. When asked about her most memorable trip ever taken, she replies, "My most memorable trip to date was the first summer that I spent in Rio de Janeiro on a FLAS fellowship. I fell in love with Rio, with Portuguese, and with life!"  Certainly, this is reflected in her own research interests and in her Portuguese courses which she has taught here at OSU.

Stay tuned for the next update!
