This year our Working Group introduces a new presentation series—“Return from the Field”—which we hope will be of particular benefit to scholars at the stage of organizing data, beginning analysis, defining their theoretical framework and making initial incursions into the writing process. Participants under this format will provide a brief summary of their project and their methodology, and share analytical or theoretical challenges they are working through to launch an intensive working session focused on gathering interdisciplinary suggestions and insights that can benefit their project at this critical midstream research moment. Christy García launches our Autumn 2014 semester with a “Return from the Field” working session on her dissertation work involving the social meaning of a particular feature of Highland Ecuadorian Spanish – intervocalic /s/ voicing. She will share data collected in summer of 2013 that explores the social and linguistic contexts in which this feature is produced. Christy will also discuss an online perception experiment she has designed to look at how this feature is perceived by speakers of this dialect.
Christy García is currently a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Hispanic Linguistics, with concentrations in Sociolinguistics and Phonetics. She traveled to Cuenca and Loja, Ecuador, during the summer of 2013 for research purposes. Through her work, she hopes to call attention to the interesting interplay of language and society in Highland Ecuadorian Spanish, a dialect that has generally been underrepresented in the Hispanic Linguistics literature.
