Hailed as "the first documentary feature ever on African American language varieties and the powerful role of langauge in African American culture," Talking Black in America is described as "a startling revelation of language as legacy, identity, and triumph over adversity." Producer Walt Wolfram of the NC State Language & Life Project states the purpose of the film as follows: "The status of African American speech has been controversial for more than a half-century now, suffering from persistent public misunderstanding, linguistic profiling, and language-based discrimination. We wanted to address that and, on a fundamental level, make clear that understanding African American speech is absolutely critical to  understanding the way we talk today."

The documentary's discussion of language is very accessible and will appeal to students, researchers, and teachers from a variety of backgrounds. To learn more about the documentary before the screening, visit the official website or view the trailer.

Free and open to the public.
