Join the SPAN 8894 Colloquium for a guest lecture by Dr. Julieta Pestarino, Assistant Curator of Latin American Photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum, exploring the circulation of Mexican photography through magazines, journals, and photobooks. The lecture will be moderated by Dr. Ignacio Corona, Associate Professor of Mexican and Latin/o American Cultural and Literary Studies at The Ohio State University.
Drawing from the exhibition Instante/revelación: Moments in Mexican Photography, currently at the Getty Museum, this presentation examines the central role that magazines, journals, and photobooks played in the development and circulation of Mexican photography throughout the twentieth century. Featuring works by photographers such as Lola Álvarez Bravo, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Héctor García, Graciela Iturbide, and Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, the exhibition highlights how printed publications functioned not only as vehicles for the dissemination of images but also as important sites of professional practice, experimentation, and exchange. Focusing on a selection of periodicals and books included in the exhibition, Julieta Pestarino explores how photographers engaged with publishing networks to reach diverse audiences and shape photographic discourse in Mexico.
The talk also addresses the intersections of photography, literature, and anthropology that inform the exhibition’s conceptual framework, inspired by Instante y revelación (1982), a landmark collaboration between poet Octavio Paz and photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo.
Notably, the exhibition includes an item on loan from the Latin American, Hispanic, Spanish, and Portuguese (LAT) Collection at The Ohio State University Libraries.
Open to the broader community, the lecture will be in Spanish; participation and questions in English are welcome.
