Event featuring chamber players from the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival and guest speaker Dr. H. Rosi Song (Durham University, UK.). This performance and lecture, which explores the life and work of Spanish Catalan cellist and composer Gaspar Cassadó (1897-1966) in conversation with that of other composers, is based on a research project that seeks to recover Cassadó’s legacy while examining what could be identified or understood as a “Spanish sound” in 20th century classical music.
Domenic Salerni, violin, is a member of the New York-based Grammy Award-winning Attacca Quartet. He is also a frequent guest of the Chiarina Chamber Players, based in Washington, DC, and is active as a chamber musician, clinician, composer, and arranger. Past awards include ArtsATL’s “30 Under 30” Award, the Yale Chamber Music Society Award, the Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Award, Finalist of the Sion-Valais International Violin Competition, and Finalist of the M Prize as a member of the band Foundry.
Rachelle Hunt, violin, has appeared as a soloist with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe, and South America since making her solo debut with orchestra at the age of nine. Since 2011, she has held a full-time position as a violinist in the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester). Ms. Hunt has been a top prize-winner in international and national competitions in the USA and Europe (Kingsville, Corpus Christi, etc).
Danielle Wiebe-Burke, viola, Mexican-Canadian violist began her musical studies on violin at an early age. At fifteen, she discovered her love for the viola, performing her solo debut with the Calgary Civic Symphony the following year. A prizewinning finalist in the 15th Sphinx Competition and in the Yale Concerto Competition, she has performed as a soloist throughout Europe and North America, most recently as a quarterfinalist in the 2021 Primrose International Viola Competition.
Katie Tertell, cello, Award-winning American cellist Katie Tertell is a performer and artistic curator, innovating how classical music is digested in modern times. Katie is Artistic Director and Founder of the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival, headquartered in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, USA. A former member of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, she enjoys a rich and varied experience as a freelance artist in the UK, Europe and America.
H. Rosi Song, guest speaker, holds a Chair in Hispanic Studies at Durham University. A specialist in 20th and 21st century Spanish culture and literature, she is the author of Lost in Transition: Constructing Memory in Contemporary Spain (Liverpool UP, 2016) and the co-editor of several important books on Contemporary Spanish Cultural Studies. She's one of the Series Editors for Culinaria, a new book series from the UToronto Press on Food Studies. Her most recent book, co-written with Anna Riera, is A Taste of Barcelona. The History of Catalan Cooking and Eating (Rowman and Littlefield, 2019).
