
Inaugural lecture of the series “Forming Futures across Languages and Borders,” organized by Ana Carolina dos Santos Marques and co-organized by Isis Barra Costa, with support from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
Dr. Moncayo will present innovative language teaching experiences in the Amazon, grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics and Multimodality inspired by social semiotics. Drawing from the projects Letras Inglês Presencial Mediado por Tecnologia, which reaches fifteen municipalities in the state of Amazonas, and Português para Pós-Graduandos Estrangeiro, her talk discusses practices that combine technology, inclusion, and intercultural awareness in the bilingual education of Amazonian and migrant students. By integrating digital technologies, collaborative practices, and multimodal texts, the experience seeks to form bilingual individuals capable of moving across cultures and borders, making language an instrument of inclusion, empowerment, and cross-border citizenship.
Dr. Vanúbia Moncayo is an Associate Professor at the State University of Amazonas (UEA) and Director of UEA’s Office for International Relations. She holds a PhD in English Language and Literature from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), with doctoral research conducted at the University of Sydney, Australia. She also holds a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability in the Amazon from the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM). Prof. Moncayo coordinates the English Language and Literature program at UEA and leads the NEPLAN research group. Her work focuses on Applied Linguistics, bilingual education, Systemic Functional Linguistics, multimodality, translation studies, tourism, and sustainability.
The lecture series: "Forming Futures across Languages and Borders: Dialogues on the Teaching of Portuguese and Other World Languages", creates a space for the exchange of experiences among educators and researchers dedicated to teaching Portuguese in the United States and foreign languages in Brazil. The discussions address challenges and innovations in teacher education, the creation of teaching materials, and the teaching of Portuguese to Spanish speakers, students in academic contexts, and immigrant communities. The series encourages the building of bridges between diverse linguistic and cultural realities, strengthening dialogue and collaboration among institutions and educators in both countries.
