About the Film:
We Were Here (Fred Kudjo Kuwornu, 2024) explores the untold history of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe. Through reenactments and interviews with international art historians, the film draws from works by Diego Velázquez, Vittore Carpaccio, and Andrea Mantegna to reveal how Black figures were represented in European art—and what that tells us about their roles in society.
The film challenges the dominant narrative that the only Black people in Europe were enslaved, presenting instead a more complex and empowering historical presence.
