Excitement is in the air as we proudly announce the completion of a stunning addition to our beloved main office in Hagerty Hall, Room 298—a vibrant mural that encapsulates the essence of Latinidad, created by the exceptionally talented artist Adam Hernandez. This masterpiece stands as a testament to the rich visual composition that defines the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
In the spirit of showcasing the diversity of our programs and the dynamism of Latinx offerings, the decision to commission a mural was a natural choice. Our department is a cultural hub that thrives on the unique visual representations of our offerings.
Adam Hernandez, a prominent local Latinx artist with Puerto Rican heritage and a deep connection to Taino ancestry, is the creative force behind this captivating mural, titled "Portal of Perception No. 2: Vejigante Sun God and the Circles of Myth." This mural joins its partner piece, "Portal of Perception No. 1: Freckled Dragon King of the 13 Eyes," already present near campus, and it is ready to be viewed and admired.
This unique artwork combines a contemporary sensibility with ancestral roots, incorporating motifs inspired by precolonial indigenous cultures. The Vejigante masks, a Puerto Rican identifier, serve as a powerful visual representation of Latinidad. Adam's work is not just a mural; it is a celebration of identity, a testament to the diversity within the Latinx community.
Adam, in addition to his artistic expertise, is deeply engaged with our community. His journey with us began in 2015 when he collaborated on a Dia de los Muertos display in Thompson Library Gallery, and since then, his artistic journey has taken off, leaving a lasting mark on local spaces, including restaurants and even Jackie-O Beer cans. Beyond his mural work, Adam is also the judge for the Brutus Calavera Coloring Contest, adding another layer of engagement and excitement to our community.
We invite you to experience the vibrancy of this mural at your convenience, as it is ready to be viewed whenever you find yourself in Hagerty Hall, Room 298. Take a moment to explore Adam Hernandez's incredible portfolio and immerse yourself in the richness of Latinx artistry here.
Thank you for being part of our vibrant SPPO community!
