John Cruz is a PhD candidate in Contemporary Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies. His main areas of research are visual culture, consumer culture, gender issues, and performance, with emphasis on gender-based violence, male homosexuality, stardom, and media. His research agenda cuts across the humanities, incorporating valuable elements from different disciplines and different media and artistic productions. His interested in how gender-based violence has been represented in silent film and Life Style Magazines; and how psychological gender-based violence is presented in Latin American literature. In addition, John Cruz is interested in connecting visual culture and performance with gender-based violence as a tool in the healing process for women.
