Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Ana Carolina dos Santos Marques is Portuguese Language Coordinator and Associated Faculty in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The Ohio State University. She holds a PhD and an MA in Studies of the Portuguese-Speaking World from Ohio State, an MA in Literary Theory, and a BA in Portuguese and English Studies from São Paulo State University (UNESP).

Her academic trajectory combines research, teaching, and program leadership with a focus on second language acquisition, Portuguese as a foreign language, contemporary literature, and Afro-Brazilian studies. At Ohio State, Dr. Marques coordinates the Portuguese language program, develops curricula across different course levels, and mentors graduate instructors.

She is the author of White Noise e Cosmopolis: O processo de desumanização em Don DeLillo (2020), and has published articles and book chapters on Brazilian cultural and literary history, postmodern fiction, and Luso-Brazilian studies. Her forthcoming book, based on her doctoral research, explores how cultural diplomacy, intellectual networks, and academic institutions contributed to the dissemination of Luso-Brazilian culture in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The project demonstrates how science, diplomacy, and culture intersected to shape Brazil’s international image while also exposing the tensions between Spanish and Portuguese in the construction of academic and cultural spaces.

Dr. Marques has received several awards and grants, including the Mario Iglesias Award for Excellence in the Study and Teaching of Spanish and Portuguese (2019), the Professor Carlos Daghlian Award for Best Research in Academic, Human, and Humanitarian Development (2018), as well as professional development grants from The Women’s Place and the Center for Latin American Studies at Ohio State.

In addition to her teaching and research, Dr. Marques has extensive experience in outreach and internationalization, including organizing academic symposia, developing study-abroad programs, fostering inter-institutional partnerships, and engaging with local schools and communities. She is an active member of ACTFL, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and the American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese (AOTP).
