This event will bring Jessica Carey-Webb, assistant professor of Lusophone Studies at the University of New Mexico in conversation with Jennifer Eaglin, Associate Professor of Environmental History and Sustainability in the Ohio State Department of History. Dr. Carey-Webb, a former ACLS fellow at the Natural Resources Defense Council, studies narratives informing the modernizing project of the Amazon region during the rubber boom of the early twentieth century in her book Eyes on Amazonia (Vanderbilt UP, 2024), while Dr. Eaglin examines the history of Brazil's sugar-based ethanol industry in Sweet Fuel: A Political and Environmental History of Brazilian Ethanol (Oxford UP, 2022). These speakers will share their approaches and takeaways in researching the historical development and environmental impact of extractive zones in Latin America, with attention to convergence and dialogue between disciplines.
