March 30th, 2017 was the initiation day for the eighteen students in the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi (Σ Δ Π), chapter Mu Lambda. The president of the association, Ashlee Dauphinais, the eighteen new associates, and the head of the Association in the Ohio State University, Dr. Paloma Martínez-Cruz, were all part of the ceremony. In keeping with national by-laws, the official ceremony was conducted in Spanish. Fire, a red carnation and the royal seal of Fernando and Isabel (which represents Castille, Leon and Aragon) were all part of the initiation. These are the symbols and insignia of the Hispanic Association. These symbols signify the light, admiration, strength, and enthusiasm that each member has for the Hispanic ideals. The three Greek letters “Σ Δ Π,” represent the Greek phrase “Spanías Didagéi Proágomen.” It means “Let’s go forth/continue forth under the teaching/guidance of the Spanish language.” Active membership is limited to college undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated a high level of interest for Spanish and Hispanic Culture. In addition, each member must express their loyalty and fidelity to the society.

El pasado 30 de marzo de 2017, se reunieron alrededor de los símbolos el fuego y el clavel rojo, y la insignia el escudo de Castilla; la presidente, Ashlee Dauphinais y los dieciocho neófitos para ser iniciados según el ritual de la Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica Sigma Delta Pi (Σ Δ Π), capítulo Mu Lambda; liderada por la profesora Paloma Martínez-Cruz en la Universidad Estatal de Ohio. El objetivo de esta sociedad, es reunir a los estudiantes de español de pregrado y posgrado que muestran entusiasmo por la lengua española y por la cultura hispánica.

Las letras griegas “Σ Δ Π”, representan el lema de la asociación “Spanías Didagéi Proágomen” que significa “sigamos adelante con la enseñanza del español”.  Estás palabras pronunciadas en coro por los neófitos de la asociación Hispánica, indican el compromiso que cada uno de ellos adquiere para representar los valores universales de la cultura hispánica. Los tres símbolos presentes, significan el brillo, la admiración, el esfuerzo y el entusiasmo que cada asociado debe manifestar por los ideales del Hispanismo. La presencia y participación en el rito de iniciación, indican la promesa implícita de ser leales a la sociedad y fieles a sus deberes con ella.
