We are thrilled to introduce the newest addition to our vibrant academic family, Dr. Laura Stigliano, who has recently joined us from the University of Chicago. Dr. Stigliano brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm that will undoubtedly contribute to the rich tapestry of our department.
Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Stigliano's academic journey spans multiple continents. She earned her bachelor's degree in Argentina before delving into literature and linguistics at the University of Buenos Aires. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to the University of Chicago, where she successfully completed her Ph.D. in 2022.
Dr. Stigliano's research journey is marked by a profound interest in theoretical linguistics, with a particular focus on syntax, more specifically, the syntax of ellipses. For those unfamiliar, ellipses involve the omission of parts of a sentence while retaining its linguistic context. Dr. Stigliano's work aimed to answer the intriguing question: How do people comprehend the unspoken elements in a sentence?
Her research, predominantly centered on Spanish, explored the conditions that facilitate the understanding of unspoken linguistic elements. Dr. Stigliano investigated the roles of context, syntactic structure, and language-specific features in comprehending these linguistic nuances.
Upon joining Ohio State University, Dr. Stigliano found herself in a nurturing academic environment. She expressed excitement about collaborating with colleagues across various disciplines, including linguistics, psychology, and speech and hearing sciences. Dr. Stigliano believes in the power of collaborative efforts, fostering the exchange of ideas and refining research through collective brainstorming.
She appreciates the supportive community within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and looks forward to engaging with her colleagues in exploring new academic horizons.
Outside the academic realm, Dr. Stigliano is an avid hiker, eager to explore the scenic trails around Columbus. She is also on a quest to conquer the "Coffee Trail," a pursuit that involves visiting coffee shops around Ohio.
Dr. Stigliano is keen on discovering Columbus and its suburbs, embracing the opportunity to engage with different facets of this vibrant city. Her love for biking and coffee perfectly aligns with her desire to explore the diverse landscapes that Ohio has to offer.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Laura Stigliano. We look forward to the valuable contributions she will make to our department and the broader academic community.
