Jonathan Pearson's journey exemplifies how experiences with language, study abroad and relationships can be timeless and resonate with today's students, as they have the power to change one's life, learning and professional trajectory. “I went on a study abroad program in Mexico while at Ohio State thinking I could finish my world language requirement quickly, but then I realized I loved Spanish and the experience I had in Mexico.” This led him to pursue a second degree in Spanish, demonstrating the enduring impact of study abroad in shaping his educational path. After graduating in 1997 with degrees in International Business and Spanish, Jonathan took a gap year and moved to Mexico to teach English, further immersing himself in the language and culture.
“I went backpacking and was touring around through Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and southern Mexico. I landed in Cuernavaca, Mexico, the city of eternal springtime, where I studied and stayed for a year before going to grad school.” said Pearson.
Following his gap year, Jonathan pursued a master's degree in international management in Phoenix, Arizona. He then embarked on a professional journey, joining Dell Computer in Austin, Texas, where he gained valuable experience in corporate life and online tech support. However, an opportunity arose when his partner was posted to Sao Paulo, Brazil through the U.S. Foreign Service. Remembering his previous experience in Brazil during an internship, Jonathan decided to join her and leave his job at Dell.
This move marked the beginning of a new chapter in Jonathan's life. He and his partner have since lived in six different countries, including Brazil, Mozambique, Thailand, South Africa, and Denmark. Their frequent relocations inspired Jonathan to pursue a consulting career, specializing in the health sector. “I was one of the early team members at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention in Mozambique, which is Portuguese speaking. “We were supporting the country in its response to HIV/AIDS.” His proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese, acquired through his study abroad experiences and subsequent ventures, has been instrumental in his consulting work. From Mozambique to Honduras, Jonathan utilized his language skills to provide health consulting services, demonstrating the lasting impact of language learning and cultural immersion on professional opportunities.
Jonathan's current home is in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he enjoys exploring the outdoors through activities such as cycling, running and hiking. He maintains a strong connection to his alma mater, The Ohio State University, passionately supporting the Buckeyes in various forms. Jonathan's study abroad experience continues to shape his life, career and global perspective, demonstrating the timeless impact of such transformative opportunities on today's students. As they seek personal growth, diverse perspectives and meaningful connections, the enduring value of study abroad and language learning remains a catalyst for change and a catalyst for personal and professional growth.
