The Bilingual Storybook Project was created by SPPO Senior Lecturer Dr. Jill Welch in 2012. The project is a partnership between the OSU Department of Spanish and Portuguese and elementary schools across Columbus. Students in OSU's SPAN3403H Honors Spanish Composition course collaborate with Spanish-speaking elementary schoolers enrolled in ESL to create fun, personalized storybooks in both English and Spanish. The project allows OSU students to practice their Spanish composition, while the elementary students receive stories that they can read in Spanish with their families and read in English to practice their literacy.

Despite the hardships faced in the Autumn 2020 semester due to COVID-19, Dr. Welch and her SPAN3403H students were still able to partner with Longfellow Elementary School to create storybooks for its students. You can read about their collaboration on the Westerville City School District website as well as the This Week Community News website.
