Jean Carlos Carniel is a graduate student and Graduate Teaching Associate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The Ohio State University, where he teaches Portuguese and Spanish. His research examines slavery and spectrality in the Portuguese-speaking world, with a particular focus on Brazil. He is also interested in the manifestations of the Gothic, horror, and the fantastic in Latin American literature and culture.
In 2026, he received the Adrian Bantjes Prize for Best Graduate Student Paper from the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies.
Before beginning his graduate studies at The Ohio State University, he worked as a language and literature teacher in Brazil at both the elementary and secondary school levels.
