STATEMENT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE
Structural, institutionalized racism has a very long history here in the US as well as in Latin America, Europe and other parts of the world. The events surrounding the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice and so many other African-Americans have brought the issue and the everyday instances of racial injustice experienced by so many into sharp relief. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese denounces racist violence based on colonial ideologies of white supremacy enacted against the afro-descendent populations in the United States and the entire American continent. We condemn police brutality and support the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement and the multiracial coalitions that have been built around that movement, along with similar black protest movements in Latin America, Portugal and Spain.
Beyond that condemnation, the department believes that it has an important role to play in finding concrete ways to intervene and help to create the conditions for racial justice. We commit to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students, faculty and staff. We dedicate ourselves to opening up more sustained dialogue about racism, anti-racism and the coloniality of power.

O racismo estrutural e institucional têm uma longa história aqui nos EUA, bem como na América Latina, na Europa e em outras partes do mundo. Os acontecimentos em torno das mortes absurdas de George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice e tantos outros cidadãos Afro-Americanos trouxeram esse assunto e as variadas instâncias de injustiça racial para a ordem do dia. O Departamento de Espanhol e Português repudia a violência racial baseada em ideologias coloniais de supremacia branca exercida contra as populações afrodescendentes dos Estados Unidos e de todo o continente americano. Condenamos a brutalidade policial e apoiamos a luta do movimento Black Lives Matter e das alianças multiraciais que se formaram em torno do movimento, assim com os movimentos de protesto semelhantes que se têm verificado na América Latina, em Portugal e em Espanha.
Para além da condenação, o departamento crê que tem um importante papel a desempenhar na busca de modos concretos de intervir e ajudar a criar as condições para a justiça racial. Comprometemo-nos a criar um ambiente seguro e acolhedor para todos os estudantes, professores e funcionários. Assumimos o compromisso de abrir diálogos mais sustentados sobre o racismo, o antirracismo e a colonialidade do poder.

El racismo estructural institucionalizado tiene una larga historia, tanto aquí en Estados Unidos como en América Latina, Europa y otras partes del mundo. Los acontecimientos que rodean la insensatez de la muerte de George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice y tantos otros afro-americanos han puesto de relieve la gravedad de la injusticia racial experimentada cotidianamente por tantas personas. El departamento de español y portugués denuncia toda forma de violencia racial contra las poblaciones afro-descendientes, tanto en Estados Unidos como en el resto del continente americano, propagada por ideologías coloniales de supremacía blanca. Condenamos la crueldad policial y nos solidarizamos con los esfuerzos del movimiento Black Lives Matter y las coaliciones multirraciales que se han creado alrededor de este movimiento social, así como con otros movimientos negros similares en América Latina, Portugal y España.
Más allá de la condena, el departamento reconoce tener un papel importante en la necesidad de encontrar nuevas maneras concretas de contribuir en la creación de mejores condiciones de justicia racial. Nos comprometemos a crear un espacio seguro y acogedor para todos los estudiantes, profesores y administrativos, así como a abrir un diálogo sostenido sobre el racismo, el antirracismo y la colonialidad del poder.
