Dr. Díaz-Basteris is an interdisciplinary scholar with a dual appointment in Latinx and Caribbean Studies, housed under the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Latinx Studies, housed at the Center for Ethnic Studies. In both units, Dr. Díaz-Basteris teaches courses on 21st-century Caribbean Narratives, Latinx Cinema, Latinx comics and disaster, and the introductory course for the Latinx Studies minor at OSU.

Dr. Díaz-Basteris’s research focuses on visual digital storytelling, especially comics and webcomics, in relation to forced displacement, femicide, Latinx diasporas, undocumented migrations, Caribbean urban landscapes, and the socio-political crises following disasters. Professor Díaz-Basteris is the co-editor of Latinx Comics Studies, published by Rutgers University Press, and has published articles in CENTRO Journal for Puerto Rican Studies, Studies in Comics, A|B: Auto/Biography Studies, and AMATL COMIX. She serves on the board of several comics studies associations, including the Red Investigadora de Narrativa Gráfica en Latinoamérica, the Research Committee on Comics Studies and Graphic Narrative in Europe, and the International Comic Arts Forum in the US.

Dr. Díaz-Basteris also leads several community engagement and outreach programs, such as the Latina Book Club in Public Libraries and the Latinx Feminist Comics Research Cluster at the FREE Center. She currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Columbus City Commission for Immigrants and Refugees Affairs.
